The Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from Friday, August 5, to Sunday, August 21 and the 2016 Olympics Hashtag is the talk of the internet. This is the event that the whole world’s been waiting for. With so much social media to express this excitement it’s only natural to want to hashtag about The Olympics, right? Well you may be right. However, should you choose to use these hashtags, be prepare for a call from the olympics committee.
The USOC sent out cease and desist letters to various non – USOC approved businesses for the last few weeks. In the letters they requested that companies not use any social media to talk about The Olympics. This includes, but is not limited to hashtags, having something to do with The Games and Rio. Why all this fuss about something as simple as a hashtag? It has nothing to do with the actual Olympians and everything to do with The Olympics brand and clients.
The chief marketing officer of USOC, Linda Baird wrote a statement saying “Commercial entities may not post about the Trials or Games on their corporate social media accounts,” this restriction includes the use of USOC’s trademarks in hashtags such as #Rio2016 or #TeamUSA.
If we can learn anything from this, it is that as a business you must do whatever you feel is necessary to protect your brand and make sure your clients are happy. In this case, the advertisers are their clients. As a business man or women you must maintain a firm handle on how your business is being portrayed. At the end of the day it is your name out on the line even if you are not the one painting a bad image. You cannot hesitate to make the hard decisions when push comes to shove.
